Serious Words

We make ourselves and what we talk about sound serious and informed by inventing jargon (with acronyms) to replace the simple words.

Instead of an asteroid headed for Earth we have a 'near earth object' (NEO), instead of a universal income we have a 'negative income tax' (NIT), instead of civilian casualties we have 'collateral damage' (CD). Not only is this jargon more 'serious' and 'informed' it also distances any emotive association with the subject.
